What the city runs on
Technology, media — the BBC moved substantial operations to Salford — professional services, and a large university and health sector. Several banks and law firms have moved back-office and increasingly front-office functions here.
The arithmetic that makes people move
Manchester salaries sit below London for equivalent roles, but housing costs sit far below. For many professionals the net position improves. Where it does not improve is seniority: the most senior roles in most sectors are still in London, so a move here can slow progression even where it raises disposable income.
What to check before you sign
The going rate for your occupation code, specifically. Because the Skilled Worker route tests the higher of the threshold and the going rate, and Manchester salaries sit closer to those figures than London ones, the rate is more likely to be the binding number here.
